Move over Botox the Vampire Facelift is here

Though it isn't a facelift and doesn't involve vampires, the "Vampire Face Lift" is a procedure, which involves injections but no surgery. Cells derived from the patient's own blood to fill wrinkles, instead of popular fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane. It has apparently been promoted on the TV show The Doctors and The Rachael Ray Show, lending an air of credibility, though it has not been proven in clinical trials.

Here's how it works: A blood sample is drawn just as it would be for a lab test, then the blood is spun in a centrifuge to isolate cells called platelets, normally involved in blood clotting. The platelet-rich portion is then injected into the skin to fill in wrinkles, without having to use synthetic materials.

Claims are made that it lasts a year or more, and that it is fully FDA-approved. There are several problems with these claims though. For one, without any published data from clinical trials, no one can say with any certainty how long the effect lasts; for another, FDA clearance would require such data.
